Aug 23,  · I thought A House Without Windows was another wonderful story by Nadia Hashimi. It once again brought to light the harsh reality of life for women living in Afghanistan, and also for all people living there longing to see their country come back to the place it once was.

Aug 09,  · The book I read before this was Luckiest Girl Alive (see review here), a book in which there are no likeable characters and no one you can really relate to. I found the complete opposite in House of Windows. This book is all about character; much more so than plot. The protagonist, Nick, is 4/5(7). The road to Riven House is as dark, twisted, and broken down as the house itself, an octagonal rarity riddled with water damage, abandoned rooms, and a painted-shut dumbwaiter. Indeed, she has cleverly imbued the very bones of the architecture with allusions to Shirley Jackson and Charlotte Perkins Gilman.

Sometimes companies that sell replacement windows exaggerate how much money people might save on their heating and cooling bills when new windows are installed. The truth is the money you could save depends on several factors: what material your existing windows are made of; how well your home is.

A House Without Windows is far more of a cultural and societal commentary than a murder mystery. But don’t mistake it all for dry prosing on with fiction only as window dressing.

That would be doing this book a grave disservice. The story is clearly a mystery, the unraveling of which requires the unraveling of the mysteries of Afghan society.
